Bible History

Welcome to Bible History where we cover some of the great stories of the Bible.  We don't have time to cover the whole Bible, but we will cover some of the great ones: Adam and Eve, Noah, Abraham, Moses, Joshua, and Jesus.

6th Grade:  Genesis

7th Grade:  The Exodus

8th Grade:  The Life of Jesus

We will be using the New International Version (1984) because of its easy readability.  A Bible will be provided for class. I encourage you to use your own Bible or your own preference of a translation.

The class is not and cannot be taught as “religious instruction.”  I teach the story, the setting, and how the story has impacted society today.  Although the class is called “Bible History” perhaps a better title would be “The Bible as Literature”.  We will be covering the stories as they are recorded in the Bible.  In high school or college you will probably study the plays of Shakespeare, which are considered classic literature. In Bible history we have the opportunity to cover the stories in the Bible as literature.

Expectations in class

All expectations could be boiled down to one word “respect”, respect for others and their ideas, respect for yourself in learning all you can, and respect for the things in the room.

Respect for others: Be to class on time; it disrupts the class when you walk in late.  Do not get up to throw something away or sharpen your pencil during discussion. Be tolerant of others point of view. No insults or any other put-downs. Follow directions.

Respect for yourself: Be to class on time so you can learn. Do your best.  Be prepared for class with pencil and paper.  Keep up with the story.  Ask questions if you do not understand.  Participate in discussions.

Respect for things:
Be careful with the Bibles, they are very fragile.  Do not write on the boards unless it is a class activity.  Take care of the desks, do not draw on them.

Be respectful and we can have the best class you have ever had!

Grades will be based on participation in class, classwork, quizzes, and the final test.

Letter to Parents

I encourage you to discuss the stories we cover with your child.  You will be surprised at how much they will remember about the story.  If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to call or email me.

In 6th grade we read through the book of Genesis.  We cover some difficult (as in sad) stories such as Cain killing Abel (Genesis 4), the destruction of the world by the flood (Genesis 6 – 9), the destruction of Sodom (Genesis 19), and Joseph being falsely accused of attempted rape (Genesis 39). We discuss each story in an age appropriate and sensitive manner.

In 7th grade we study the story of how God uses Moses to bring the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt to the land God had promised them, the land of Canaan.

In 8th grade we study the story of Jesus as it is recorded in the four Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.

If you would rather that your child not take Bible history for personal reasons, send a note to me or the school counselor and they will be placed in another class.
